TIP OF THE WEEK: How to Save on Maple Syrup!!!

I’m all about saving money, and I like do-it-yourself options, especially if they are quick and easy. We go through maple syrup at an alarming rate in our household.  In the 9 months I have been couponing, I have yet to see a great deal for syrup in the store. (the lowest we get it is $1 at the Dollar Store)

While digging through a box of family recipes, I found one for the easiest homemade syrup ever.  It is way cheaper than the cheapest generic, plus you get to decide what flavor! To top it off, this was faster to make than the pancakes. And when you have a toddler hanging on each leg demanding breakfast and are out of syrup, this is a lifesaver!

Maple Syrup
  • 1 cup white sugar.
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar.
  • 1 cup water.
  • 1 teaspoon maple flavoring.
Boil until dissolved and you are done.
I sometimes also add a teaspoon of butter pecan in addition to the maple, or pretty much any flavoring your heart desires. Once it has cooled I just pour it back into an old syrup bottle. I’m sure you could convert some of the sugar to splenda and even use real Maple extract instead of imitation if you wanted. Try it out and play around with it.

PRICE BREAKDOWN
Sugar: $0.56/lb Winco bulk – 2 cups of sugar per lb = $0.28
Brown Sugar: $0.69/lb Winco bulk – 2 ½ packed cups per lb = $0.28
Maple Flavoring: $3.28 for 2 oz Watkins (Walmart) which would be 12 tsp = $0.27
Final Price: $0.83
